After Lithuania’s President-elect Ms Dalia Grybauskaite will be inaugurated on 12 July Lithuania should present the European Commission with a new candidate to replace her.  Prime Minister Kubilius mentioned that the government would not discuss the candidacy to the post until the elections to the European Parliament on June 7.

However, few candidacies have already been discussed.  The Insurrection party suggested Mr Petras Austrevicius from the Liberal Movement party.  Mr Austrevicius said that he would consider if he was suggested for the post of commissioner.

Chairman of the Liberal and Center party Mr Zuokas came up with idea send to Brussels the acting Finance Minister Semeta.  The minister who just today survived a vote of non-confidence in the Parliament said that he did not have time to think about it.  The Member of the European Parliament, Conservative Laima Andrikiene announced that she could take over from Grybauskaite if she was only asked.

The name of the acting minister of foreign affairs Mr Usackas has been also mentioned in the media.  However, Ms Grybauskaite expressed her doubts about a lack of his experience.  However, Mr Usackas declared that he would consider if he was only asked to go take over from the President-elect.

When MP Kubilius was asked if he would go for the post but he answered that his wife would not allow him to do so.  On the other hand president Adamkus when asked suggested for the position his Press Officer Rita Grumodaite, of course he was joking.

Term of the present EU Commissioners expires on this October.

Grybauskaite has the support of the TS – she doesnt need to reward them with an EC seat. I’m thinking she’ll pick someone who has no party/government affiliation at all or a member from the academia…She represents no party – it would make sense her replacement carries the same status.

    Donskis ? 😉

I am not sure if Prof Donskis would be an appropriate candidate. Lietuvos Zinios daily speculates the MEP Ona Jukneviciene could be Grybauskaite’s favourite. But this is only speculation.
