President of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus

In 2005, President of Lithuania Adamkus refused to participate in solemnities held in Moscow May 9 on occasion of victory against Nazism.  Lithuania is ‘paying’ prise for this brave President’s move even today.  As the President stated  on this interview to the National TV “After Lithuania has refused to take part at the parade in Moscow, I became, in the language of diplomats, “persona non grata” for Putin. I am being ignored, he tries not to see me”. In Adamkus’ words, leaders of foreign countries have noticed complicated communication of him and the Russian leader even during formal greeting ceremonies.

In the president’s words, during a recently held meeting, Putin greeted leaders of other countries with wide smile and greeted him very dry — shortly shook his hand and turned away. Then foreign colleagues told to Adamkus about the behavior of Russian president — “He must “love” you very much”.

When asked by the reporter  if he planned to warm the relations some way, Adamkus reminded that he constantly emphasizes the principle of respect in relations of Lithuania and Russia in both state and personal levels. This, in his words, is needed in order to ensure good bilateral relations and stability in the region.
