Andrea,

Since your grandparents left before June 15th, 1940 I guess at the moment you will not be eligible for dual citizenship. The above article is just a draft, and has not been passed into law.

Also, to be able to apply for Lithuanian citizenship for yourself, you would have to have documents to proof that your grandmother was born in Lithuania, and had Lithuanian citizenship.

Hi,

My grandmother, who is now deceased, left Vilnius I believe in the 1920s and emigrated to the US via Canada. My grandfather may also be from Lithuania, but that is less clear because of the changing borders. Based on this, would I be eligible for dual Lithuanian/US citizenship. Last I had read, I would have to give up my US citizenship.

My grandfather is turning 91 in March 2010. I recently visited him in Detroit where he lives. He informed me I was eligible to become a dual citizen as so is he already. He was born in/ around Šiauliai in 1919.

How do I proceed?

Elisabeth,

You would need to find out if your grandfathers had Lithuanian citizenship issued prior to June 15th, 1940. If yes, then you should be eligible for Lithuanian citizenship.

Was the city they came from part of Lithuanian territory at the time they were born?
